The bird was acquired from G Randall Johnson, who collected it near Rockingham Bay, Far North Queensland, in 1866. For a time it was believed to be a species distinct from the Casuarius australis shot and named in 1854 by naturalist Thomas Wall (who had perished before he could transport the skin).
